A Non-governmental organization, Ogra foundation spent more than Sh13 million in supporting girl child education in both Suba North and Suba South Sub counties last year.
At least 2000 girls in secondary schools received payment of school fees, provision of sanitary towels and Sh500 pocket money to each of them.
Director of the foundation, Jim Akali made the remarks Friday, while addressing parents of Lambwe Mixed Secondary school their during prize giving day, where he disclosed that they were making a follow up on the progress of students they have sponsored to ensure they succeeded in their education.
Akali further revealed that this year they have plans to absorb an extra 200 girls into the program, adding that they are working with various school principals to ensure that there is no duplication on the beneficiaries, but only genuine girls qualified for help.
He said the initiative is meant to support girl child education within the region, though they also had plans to work with other like minded friends to absorb 1000 boys in their programme.
“As an organization we follow up on our beneficiaries who drop out of school to try and bring them back on fold. In case of pregnancy issues, we allow the girls to deliver and thereafter we take them back to school,” Akali said.
The director promised to give out laptops to any of the girls within Suba North and South Sub Counties who gets an A plain in KCSE exam, adding that their interest as an organization was to ensure majority of the girls attend school.
However, he urged parents to supplement their student’s education as they do not have the ability to fully support their beneficiaries.
