The Nyeri County Women Representative, Rahab Mukami has urged the elderly people who have not yet registered with NHIF and cash transfer programme to visit her office for possible assistance.
Mukami noted that there are still quite a number of elderly people who have not yet been registered and suffering at home from various ailments but cannot seek medical care because they have no cash or knowledge of how to get registered.
She said the elderly require more care, adding that the government has also introduced the UHC programme where patients are being treated free in the government facilities in four pilot counties.
Speaking on Sunday at Mahiga Chief’s camp in Nyeri County, the legislator said by registering in cash transfer programme, it will enable them to sustain themselves without relying on their children who sometimes forget about them.
She also called on children who have abandoned their elderly parents to go back home and take care of them especially during this cold season and also reminded them that one day they shall get old just like their parents.
“You will also one day get old, so take care of your parents so that when your day comes you shall get someone to take care of you ‘said Mukami
Last week a group of elderly led by the Founder and CEO of Purity Elderly Care Foundation, Joyce Kairu matched to the office of the Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and presented a memorandum.
The memorandum was to petition the county government to endorse and include in its calendar every 15th of June as world Abuse Awareness Day as an annual event and that the county enacts law on the elderly.
