Kapkatet hospital staff charged with raping patient

A medical staff at the Kapkatet Sub-County Hospital in Bureti, Kericho county, who allegedly raped a female patient at the facility, has denied committing the offense before a Kericho court.

Hillary Kipkirui Bett, an imaging sciences technician at Kapkatet sub-county hospital appeared before Kericho chief magistrate Samuel Soita Monday.

Bett who was represented by an advocate pleaded not guilty to the rape charge as read out to him by the court clerk stating that on June 14th 2019 at the Kapkatet sub-county hospital he intentionally and unlawfully raped a 23 year old woman.

He also faced an alternative charge of committing an indecent act with an adult, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Evidence documented by the prosecution revealed that the female patient had gone to the hospital for a CT scan at around 11 pm last Friday after experiencing severe headaches.

The accused who was attending to her allegedly injected her with drugs before raping her.

Bett is said to have fled after committing the offense and was arrested from his hideout in Kericho town on 15th June 2019.

He was released on a bond of Sh100, 000 with a surety of a similar amount.

The case was fixed for a pre-trial mention on 1st July this year.

Meanwhile, in January last year, a Form 2 student who had gone for treatment at the same facility after falling sick in school was defiled by an intern nurse from Kapkatet Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).

Dennis Kiplangat Bore was later on arraigned before Kericho senior resident magistrate Solomon Ngetich and charged that on 27 January this year at Kapkatet hospital in Kapkatet location within Kericho County, he defiled a minor aged 16 years.

Bore is out on a bond of Sh200, 000 with surety of a similar amount and the case is still pending before the court.
