A family in Isinya, Kajiado County is appealing to well-wishers to help them raise school fees for their daughter who is yet to join form one three weeks after other students reported to their respective schools.
Agnes Muthoni, who scored 373 marks in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations, has not yet reported to Nyabururu Girls High School in Kisii County, as her mother cannot afford to raise the required fees.
Muthoni who comes from a humble background says she has lost all hope of continuing with her education, as her mother, a casual laborer at Isinya town, is unable to raise enough money, to take her to school.
“I worked very hard in my KCPE exams and I got into a good school, but my mother cannot afford to raise the required fees. I am appealing to well-wishers, to come to my rescue so that I continue with my education and realize my dream of being a doctor in future,” she pleaded.
She revealed that she applied for bursaries and scholarships after she received her admission letter, but has not been successful.
Muthoni added that since Form One admission began, she has been stressed and often in a low mood, as most of her former classmates, have joined high school.
According to the girl’s mother, Lucy Muthoni, the money she gets from selling water is very little and can hardly feed them and her other children.
She called on well-wishers to help her take her daughter to school, as she is a bright girl and giving her a chance in education would enable her to realize her dreams.
“My daughter passed her exams and was selected to join a good school, but she is still at home as I cannot afford to raise the school fees needed. I am kindly calling on Kenyans and people of good-will to help me take her to school,” he implored.
Agnes Muthoni, is among 130, 000 students countrywide, who are yet to join Form One for lack of school fees.
According to the Ministry of Education, some 131,854 or nine per cent of learners expected to transition to Form One this year, are yet to report to secondary schools.
Kajiado County has the lowest number of admissions at 64 per cent, followed by Narok at 72 per cent then Isiolo at 77 per cent, while Kilifi has 79 per cent admissions to secondary school.
The Government has meanwhile embarked on a mop-up exercise to ensure all students report to secondary schools.
