Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has urged the Maasai community to enroll their children for the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) courses available in the country.
Dr Omollo said that the government has put several measures in place including construction of TVETs to ensure that all students get skills which will help them to fend for themselves in future.
“It is not a must for all of us to have a degree. There are so many courses that one can pursue in the technical colleges which can enable one to fend for themselves. The government has constructed TVETs all over the country so that those who have not secured university grades can pursue technical courses and gain other skills like masonry and the rest,” said Dr Omollo.
He emphasised the role of education in shaping destinies of the youths and their communities.
“A student who has scored D in this area, is equal to the one who has scored a C in another area since they undergo a lot of challenges and the government takes note of that. If you have scored a D in KCSE, please enroll for a certificate course, then proceed for a diploma then degree course but do not stop learning,” he said.
Dr Omollo also urged parents to take care of their children to avoid teen pregnancies which later lead to early marriages.
The PS underscored that children under 18 years of age should be in school rather than being married off.
Dr Omollo addressed the parents and students in Meto, Kajiado Central during a youth mentorship meeting organised by the area MP Memusi Kanchori.
The MP said that it is unfortunate that most of the form-four candidates in the constituency do not proceed with their education once they sit for KCSE due to poor performance.
“Even if you perform poorly in KCSE, it is not all lost, your education journey should not end there. Everyone has an opportunity to proceed with their education whether they scored an A or an E in KCSE. For you to be beneficial to the community, you must advance your education. We do not have a future, if we do not learn,” emphasised Memusi.
Mr Memusi said that 98 per cent of the students in the constituency attained D+ and D grades and only two managed to get a C+ and C adding that was the reason he organised mentorship programmes in all the secondary schools in the constituency to boost performance.
During the youth mentorship meeting, representatives from Maasai National Polytechnic, Umma University, Masinde Muliro University, Family and Equity bank took the students through career choice.
With regard to the festive season, the PS encouraged citizens to take safety and security measures to avoid activities that might endanger their lives and property.
