County government targets to plant 5 million trees

The  county government of Trans Nzoia is set to plant 5 million trees in its environmental conservation efforts this year.

Speaking  during the commemoration of the World Environment Day at Maziwa Primary School, the Chief Officer ministry  of   Water, Environment and Natural Resources, John  Meng’wa  said the county government had already planted more than 2 million trees.

He  said the department had drafted a bill that will be tabled in the county executives meeting and the county assembly  for approval to help promote the planting of fruit trees in the county.

Meng’wa  also  warned against planting of eucalyptus trees along river banks and instead urged for the planting of indigenous  trees.

The  Health  CECM, Clare  Namenge  said re-afforestation was key in safeguarding the environment and cushioning Kenyans from  the raging effects of air pollution and climatic changes.

Namenge  added  that an estimated 9 out of 10 people worldwide were exposed to air pollutants that exceed world health  organisation, air quality guidelines hence lowering life expectancy and damaging economies across the world.

She  said  air pollution also cause global warming whose effect is now felt across the globe.
