Hundreds of residents of central Karachuonyo location in Homabay county, have been forced to move out of their homes due to flash floods.
The families from Kamsergei- kosika village, kogembo, kosano and other 20 families have been displaced by floods.
Heavy rains have pounded the area for the last two days causing floods that swept the farms.
Gloe Achieng’ Arido a flood victim, said an estimated 20 families have been displaced.
She urged the local leaders including the Member of Parliament and the County Assembly Member to swiftly come to their aid.
Askar Akinyi Odondi, another victim said the elderly and children were the worst affected.
“We are asking the government to build dykes along the major rivers to mitigate this perennial problem” He said.
The area Assistant Chief Owino Ezekiah directed the affected residents to camp at Yala primary school and kogembo dispensary where they will receive humanitarian assistance.
“This is the fourth time we are being affected by floods in the recent past. We are requesting well-wishers to assist in any way they can.” He said
The administrator said the Kenya Red Cross have moved to the ground and assessed the situation.
“We have asked the County government to construct a dam as a long term solution to divert the flood waters” He said.
