Floods wreak havoc in Maua town

Floods occasioned by the ongoing heavy rainfall in Maua town have displaced residents and forced businesses to stand still.

The flooding has rendered some places impassable, businesses and churches closed, and residential homes have been surrounded by water, leading to the displacement of many residents living in Iriene, Kaciongo, and Annex in Maua town.

The residents lamented that they spent the whole night in cold waters as their houses were submerged.

They said that for many years, every time it rains, the place always becomes inhabitable, hence affecting their daily activities.

Elizabeth Makena, a resident of Iriene, lamented that their children, especially those beginning to sit for their KCSE exams on November 6, are at risk since the roads are impassable.

They further noted that the drainage system that was constructed in the town has not fully addressed their needs and urged both national and county governments to come to their aid.

“Maua town needs a standard drainage and sewerage system to avoid these inconveniencing incidents,” said Alex Muthomi, a businessman in Maua town.

The floods paralysed the miraa business, and many traders are counting losses since no vehicles can access the farm to transport Khat (miraa) to the market.

Efforts to reach the Maua town administrator for comment via phone bore no fruit.
