Refurbishment of Afraha Stadium ongoing

In a collaborative effort to enhance sporting facilities in the Rift Valley region, a team of engineers from Sports Kenya and Athletics Kenya (AK) today joined the Nakuru City Management to inspect the ongoing refurbishment of Afraha Stadium.

During the inspection, the team examined the on-going construction work to ensure that every aspect of the stadium’s refurbishment adhered to the highest quality standards.

Nakuru City Manager Gitau Thabanja said the team particularly paid close attention to the structural reliability of the stadium, ensuring that it would provide a safe and secure environment for athletes and spectators alike.

Further, they emphasized the importance of providing athletes with top-notch facilities that would enhance sporting performance and inspire future generations to pursue sports.

The City Board equally acknowledged the collaborative efforts of Sports Kenya and Athletics Kenya, recognizing that their dedication to improving sports infrastructure in the region has elevated the country to international standards.

The City Manager reaffirmed Governor Susan Kihika’s commitment to promoting sports and physical fitness in the county by safeguarding and supporting budding talents in the county.

The team from Athletics Kenya expressed its satisfaction with the progress made so far on the revamping of the Afraha Stadium, which will have a holding capacity of 20,000 people.

Thabanja said the contractor is currently working on leveling the pitch, spreading marram on the track, casting the internal drainage, and constructing the perimeter wall before the soon-anticipated reopening of the stadium.

He noted that sports have become an integral part of people’s lives and provide a wide range of activities for the youth to make money and live more comfortably than even white-collar jobs.

Recently, the East African Region expressed interest in hosting a future FIFA World Cup, which would require submitting a formal bid to the world body. However, the bidding process for the most popular sports tournament is highly competitive, and it involves a thorough evaluation of the proposed host country’s readiness, infrastructure, and capabilities.
