Families displaced by floods in Kisumu County

Several  families have been displaced in Nyakach and Kano plains in Nyando sub counties following flood occasioned by heavy rains in the past three days.

Close to 500 families have been displaced at Kanyang’ombe village in Nyakach Sub- county and several others displaced in Kano plains after River Nyando broke its banks.

However, no case of death has been reported but the Kisumu Disaster Management Committee has asked those living around flood prone areas to vacate to higher grounds to avert loss of lives and properties.

In  Nyakach, some families have moved to Kanyawal primary school, where they have sought refuge and are now appealing for relief assistance.

Other  areas  that have been affected by the floods, include informal settlements in Kisumu town, including Nanga Primary School in Nyalenda and the surrounding areas where homesteads have been submerged.

The  Director of Special Programs and Disaster Management in the county, Ruth  Odinga said they have launched a multi-sectoral approach to ensure lives are not lost.

Ms. Odinga said that they are working together with the Kenya Red Cross, who is giving out some basic food items to people affected by the floods.

”The situation is really bad at Nyalenda B, and we are doing everything possible to solve the issue at hand,” said Ms. Odinga.

River  Nyamasaria and  River Auji  have broken its banks, therefore causing the floods around Nyalenda in Kisumu County.
