Elderly mark fete in style

Nyeri County celebrated the United Nations International Day of Older Persons at Wamagana Stadium in Tetu constituency.

The event was organised by the Purity Elderly Care Foundation, and the elderly turned up in large numbers to celebrate the day.

Speaking during the occasion under the theme ‘Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World,’ the founder of the foundation, Joyce Wanjiku Kairu, said this is the 13th such celebration being hosted by the foundation in Nyeri.

Wanjiku called for the young to respect and ensure dignity for the senior citizens in the country.

She also called on children who have abandoned their elderly parents to go back home and take care of them at all times, and she also reminded them that one day they will get old just like their parents.

“You will also one day get old, so take care of your parents so that when your day comes, you will get someone to take care of you, ‘said Wanjiku.

She also appealed to the national government to release stipends for the elderly on time.

The event was also attended by the National Gender and Equality Commission, led by Vice Chairperson Thomas Okoth and Commissioner Dr. Margaret Karungaru.

It was a fun day for the elderly, who shared meals and drinks and made merry during the celebrations.
