School Matron Commits Suicide in Murang’a

Shock and grief engulfed Mumbi Girls High School located within Murang’a town after their matron died in a suspected suicide incident.

The body of a 56-year old Joyce Mwinzi was found dangling from the roof of her house Tuesday morning after she failed to report to work.

The school Principal Esther Wambugu said the matron was off duty Monday and was supposed to report to work on Tuesday morning.

Wambugu said the deceased body was found hanging from the roof in the sitting room of her house located within the school compound.

“She was living in one of our staff quarters and after she failed to show up to work, one of her close friends who is also one of our workers went to her house only to find her body dangling from the roof,” the principal added.

She further added that the matron had worked in the school for over 33 years and was initially staying with her husband, before he retired in January this year.

“Her death is very shocking especially to the school fraternity. The matron was very dedicated to her work but we will leave police to do their investigations,” added Wambugu.

The school principal said on Saturday they were together with the deceased during prize giving day at the institution and she was jovial and interacted well with her other colleagues.

Her long time friend, Pauline Muthoni told KNA that she decided to visit Mwinzi at around 10 am after she failed to report to work.

“I was shocked to see her body hanging from the roof with a rope tied on her neck. I moved in haste and informed the school authorities,” lamented Muthoni.

Confirming the incident, Murang’a County Police Commander Josephat Kinyua said they were treating the incident as suicide though they have launched investigations.

He added that the body was removed to Murang’a county referral hospital pending postmortem.

The police commander decried increased cases of suicide in the region adding that, “People should think of other ways of solving any problem before thinking of killing themselves.”
