TSC Murang’a concludes hiring of intern teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Muranga, has concluded recruitment of intern teachers to be deployed to junior secondary schools within the county.

The County TSC Director, Fredrick Nganga, observed that the newly recruited 635 teachers will be distributed to 514 public primary schools, which host junior secondary schools.

Speaking to KNA at his office Wednesday, Ng’ang’a noted that the recruited tutors are expected to start reporting to schools, where they have been deployed from September 1.

The teachers, he added, will undergo a short training and induction after reporting to their respective areas of work.

“Schools with one stream will get a teacher, but those with two or more streams will get an additional teacher. After reporting, we will do an assessment to establish whether there is a teacher shortage at the junior secondary schools,” he said.

Initially, the TSC recruited and deployed 788 teachers for junior secondary schools and deployed them to various schools within Murang’a County.

“As we deploy the teachers, we are also considering subject combinations needed in respective schools,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ng’ang’a noted the TSC has concluded a three-day training of head teachers on a School Based Teacher Support System (SBTSS) programme.

The SBTSS programme is aimed at supporting the performance improvement of science subjects and English in secondary schools.

“In Murang’a, the SBTSS programme is being implemented in three subcounties, namely Murang’a East, Kigumo, and Kandara.

Last week we trained 207 head teachers and principals drawn from the three subcounties who will provide professional development training in subject matter and methodology,” explained Ng’ang’a.

The director added that the training was geared towards equipping the school heads with skills for monitoring and supporting the operationalization of the SBTSS programme in their schools.

“The programme was initiated by the government some years ago, and we started by training science and English subject teachers. We hope that in the near future the SBTSS will be implemented in the remaining seven subcounties within Murang’a,” he noted.

Science subjects and English, Ng’ang’a observed, have not performed well in many secondary schools within the county, thus the need to implement the programme.
