Fisherman drowns in Lake Victoria

A somber mood has engulfed the fishing community in Litare Beach, Homa Bay County after a fisherman drowned while on a fishing expedition in Lake Victoria.

The fisherman identified as Charles Opondo drowned in the Lake last evening as he was peeing while on a moving boat.

The deceased was in the company of his fellow fishermen when the tragedy struck.

According to the Assistant Chief of Kamasengre West Sub-location Meshack Wachianga, fishermen reported to his office that Odongo was standing on the moving boat to respond to a call of nature when lost balance and fell into the water.

“Fishermen have reported that Odongo stood in the boat and began making a call of nature in the lake without informing the coxswain to slow down.  He eventually fell into the lake where his body sank and disappeared,” Wachianga said.

The administrator urged fishermen to always wear life jackets while in the lake to prevent deaths in case of such accidents.

“If he had put on a life jacket, he would have floated to enable his colleagues to rescue him,” Wachianga said.

Litare Beach Management Unit Chairman Isaiah Pero appealed to the government and well-wishers to assist in the search for Odongo’s body.

“I appeal to well-wishers to help us look for the body of our colleague,” Pero said.
