Migori experiences a cholera outbreak

Migori County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Julius Nyerere has urged residents to observe high levels of hygiene to help curb the spread of Cholera.

The disease has so far claimed the lives of five people in the region with 40 other admitted to various hospitals.

Nyerere said that the worst hit areas are urban centers and mining areas that include Nyatike and Suna East Sub County.

He affirmed that the County was doing everything possible to prevent the spread of the disease to non-affected areas. The county, he added has also made efforts to ensure an uninterrupted supply of clean water in urban markets and mining areas.

The officer urged those handling food at eatery spaces to also maintain a high standard of hygiene and food care to help curb the spread.

“So far the county government and other stakeholders have been distributing water treatment chemicals to ensure hygiene is maintained in the affected sub-counties,” noted Nyerere.

He also affirmed that community health workers and volunteers in all the health facilities in the county have already been sensitized through a community surveillance programme on how to contain the outbreak.
