Lake Victoria Development Agency develops a plan to ensure supply of clean water

Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency (LVNWWDA) has developed a five year strategic plan that will ensure steady supply of clean water and sanitation services in six counties.

The six counties include Kakamega, Nandi, Busia, Trans- Nzoia, Vihiga and Bungoma.

Speaking at a press conference in Bungoma, the Chairman, Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency John Imoit, said that the strategic plan will help in providing clean water and sewerage services.

“The strategic plan will enable us work systematically in the six counties to ensure that all stalled and new projects are completed within a set time frame,” he said.

Imoit noted that the Agency being a government firm seeks to ensure that all government institutions have clean water supply and sanitation adding that the firm works with other water providers like Nzowasco to ensure that every resident is accessing clean water.

He said that the agency is also working in line with President Ruto’s bottom- up economic agenda of ensuring that every individual in Kenya accesses clean water.

Imoit called on the County government to work with the Agency to ensure that they do the last mile water connectivity to reach the intended beneficiaries since the function is devolved.

“Our work is to ensure that water points are drilled in proposed areas then the county government should take over from there and ensure that water reaches locals,” he said.

He said that in this year’s strategic plan, Nandi, Kakamega and Trans- Nzoia Counties will get dams. “In this financial year, we are scheduled to drill dams in three counties; Trans- Nzoia, Kakamega and Nandi,” he said.

He also pointed out that the firm intends to generate power from the available water falls in the region.

The firm CEO, Antony Kisaka noted that every county has its own set of projects that will be done as defined in the strategic plan 2023- 2027 adding the plan will also ensure that the water projects in the Counties will be complete in five years.

The CEO decried leakages and illegal water supply as a major problem facing water firms.

To address the illegal water connectivity and leakages, Kisaka said that the organization is working with water police who identify affected areas across counties. “We are working with the water police and water provider Nzowasco who help us in ascertaining the illegal water connections and leakages in the six counties,” he said.
