The main suspect on the murder of a Prison Wardress on Friday tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself in the abdomen.
Joseph Otieno had accompanied detectives from Murang’a to his home in Nairobi where they were going to do a house search for missing items of the wardress, Pauline Wangari.
Otieno is said to have tried to jump from a balcony from third floor but was restrained by the police officers before he then stabbed himself with a kitchen knife but was rushed to a nearby health centre where he was treated with medics, saying he was out of danger.
After witnessing the incident the mother of the suspect fainted forcing police also to rush her to hospital for treatment.
Otieno was today arraigned before a Murang’a court together with his friend, Rogers Namukolo and his aunt, Mary Amollo facing charges of killing Wangari at the beginning of the week.
Criminal investigations officers had applied before the court to hold the suspects for 14 days so as to complete investigations, an application which was granted.
The officers also obtained a search warrant to enable them do searches at the suspects’ houses claiming some items of the deceased went missing immediately after the murder incident.
The Murang’a County Police Commander, Josphat Kinyua said some items believed to belong to the deceased were found at the home of the main suspect.
Otieno had told police that he travelled from Kisumu to Murang’a to meet Wangari whom they knew each other through Facebook.
The suspects are expected to appear in court on May 31, to stand trial on murder charges if the police will have completed their investigations.
