The Department of Fisheries in Rachuonyo North Sub County have issued a stern warning to private developers who have encroached into riparian land to vacate immediately.
Speaking on Thursday at Rambira Beach in Karachuonyo Constituency during the inauguration of Beach Management Unit officials (BMU), the area Sub County Fisheries Services Officer, George Omondi said that some unscrupulous private investors have put up structures along the beaches in the region, saying such structures will be demolished without any further reference to the owners.
Omondi lamented that a number of beaches have been encroached by private investors and other area residents who build hotels and permanent business structures.
The officer further argued that no permanent structures are allowed on riparian lands, citing areas like Obila beach, Komollo beach, Rambira beach where the destruction of the land has been done.
At the same time, Omondi appealed to the community whose lands border Lake Victoria that there is a stretch of about 70 meters which is left as a riparian land in line with the Agricultural Act.
He emphasized that incase the affected people fails to abide with the warning then the government will intervene.
