The County Government of Mombasa is set to distribute revision materials to national examination candidates in a bid to bolster performance.
Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, determined to see improvement in national examinations in his tenure, directed the CECM in charge of education, Mbwarali Kame, to ensure all candidates have revision materials during these August school holidays.
Nassir says parents will not incur any extra expense; the revision materials will be delivered directly to the candidates’ desks.
He was speaking during an Education Day held at Khadija Primary School Wednesday. Nassir further announced plans to award best-performing students, teachers, and schools from next year, from ward to county level, to encourage excellence in education.
The Governor says they will be motivational trips for best-performing students outside the county and full scholarships when they transit to secondary schools or universities.
“We want the county government to facilitate inter-school activities. Let them showcase their talents. I want you to come up with talent activities within schools,” he said.
The ongoing school feeding programme for ECDE learners will be extended to community schools and grades one and two. “We will upscale it progressively to grades three and four,” said Governor Nassir.
He went on: “This has been paid by the county government of Mombasa; no parents have paid a cent. All ECDEs that have stalled must be completed by the end of the year to admit learners in January”.
Nassir told school heads to come up with inter-school extracurricular activities that will be funded by the devolved government for learners to showcase their talents.
“I will not leave my ten years without ensuring that Mombasa is going to be one of the best-performing counties in terms of education and extracurricular activities. We will invest in these children because the future of these children is the future of this great county,” said Governor Nassir.
James Gichungi, Director of Education, noted that the number of secondary schools has increased from 50 to 55, while Primary schools have increased from 100 to 107.
“We have taken several measures to improve education in this great county. We have continuously worked with our Ministry of Education to ensure the expansion of existing facilities and opening of new schools,” said Gichungi, adding that they are continuously monitoring school infrastructures to ensure students are learning in a safe environment.
