Slaughterhouses warned over waste management

The Turkana county government will shut down slaughterhouses that do not comply with solid and liquid waste management regulations.

Turkana County Director for Veterinary Services Dr. Benson Long’or speaking Tuesday, when he undertook a spot-check of several slaughterhouses in Kanamkemer and Lodwar Township Wards, expressed concern over poor waste management that could pose a risk to hundreds of meat consumers in Lodwar Municipality.

Long’or informed users of the slaughterhouses that the devolved administration will scale up the routine meat inspection and hygiene supervision to ensure compliance and address safety concerns.

Other long term measures to be effected included public sensitization programs as well as upgrading of slaughter slabs to modern slaughterhouses that would be incorporated with both liquid and solid waste management infrastructure.

Others present during the inspection tour included the County Laboratory In-charge Dr. Erenius Nakhadio and the head of veterinary public health Dr. Agnes Mukunya among other county officials.
