Security team intensifies cackdown on illicit brew

The Nandi East Sub County security team, led by the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Leonard Mgute, has intensified its war against second generation brews that pose health risks to consumers.

The team confiscated 30 cartons of illicit brew from Himaki Centre, Nandi East Sub County, and arrested the vendor.

Confirming the incident at the Lessos Police Station where the confiscated alcohol was stored Mgute, who was accompanied by Sub-County Police Commander Francis Omulo and other security officers, said the cartons comprised alcohol packaged in bottles labelled African Spear Vodka, Jambo Extra, Silver Star, Golden Dream, Vodka Medal, Spike Vodka, and Kibao Vodka.

DCC further noted that Kenya Bureau of Standards officers carried samples to be tested at government chemists to determine their content.

The administrator vowed to work with his team around the clock to have all alcohol vendors engaging in illegal business within his area of administration arrested and arraigned in court.

“Selling alcohol beverages is not illegal, but selling alcohol that lacks proper licencing, regulation, and quality is illegal,” pointed out the DCC, noting that some of the alcohol confiscated had already expired as per the expiry date on the seals.

He applauded the residents who are supporting the security team to curb the illegal business by informing them of any illegal brews in their locality, noting that they are saving consumers from the health risks associated with such alcohol.

“I want to thank all residents, the chiefs, and all other security stakeholders whose concerted efforts made it possible for us to seize this illegal alcohol early enough before it was offloaded.

My warning goes to those who want to do alcohol business; if you can’t sell legal products, it is better you switch to a different business,” said Mgute.
