700 girls in Suba North receive sanitary pad donations

A total of 700 girls from four schools in Suba North Sub County have benefitted from sanitary pads donated by the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Foundation in partnership with the International Association of Women Judges Kenya.

KPC Foundation representative, Job Apuko, said that the initiative was aimed at curbing school absenteeism associated with menstrual periods for girls, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds.

The schools which benefitted were Lambwe Special School for the Deaf, Lambwe Christian School for the Deaf, Ongongo Secondary School and Lambwe Primary School.

He said that the foundation had also spent over Sh24 million improving infrastructure in schools in Homa Bay County.

The projects include the construction of two classrooms worth Sh3 million at Lambwe Special Secondary School, a dormitory worth Sh5 million at Siburi Secondary, and a dormitory worth Sh5 million at St. Joseph Multipurpose Secondary School.

Other projects are a modern laboratory and dormitory worth Sh8 million at Simbi Mixed Secondary School, as well as an administration block and latrine valued at Sh3 million at Kowuor Primary School in Karachuonyo Constituency.

Apuko said their objective was to ensure learners in the county got a conducive learning environment and ensure that they have a bright future.

“Education is a game changer that can enable children to be productive citizens in the future. The Foundation strives to enable children of the region to become productive citizens when they grow up,” Apuko said.

Lambwe Special Secondary School Principal, Margaret Kwamboka, said the support from the KPC Foundation had alleviated the shortage of classrooms in her school.

“This donation of sanitary pads and the classrooms project will have a positive impact on our students. It will improve academic performance in this school,” Kwamboka added.

She said most of her students are orphans who faced various social challenges; hence, they need support.

Present were Lady Justice Teresa Odera from Kisii High Court and Chief Magistrate from Homa Bay, Jacinta Orwa.
