Over 70 widows from Olooltoto area in Narok South Sub County have a reason to smile after they received food donations from the Narok County Peace Association group.
Narok County Peace Ambassador Joshua Kaputa said the food was given to the community that was hard hit by a prolonged dry spell that made many families struggle to get food.
Kaputa said being an orphan himself, he understands the challenges the vulnerable families face, hence the reason the organization volunteered to give them food during this festival season.
He called on the community to be mindful of the less fortunate people in the society and help put a smile on their faces during this festival season.
“We are part of the community so we understand the challenges many families face. Today we are here because God sent us to be a blessing to these families. I am an orphan and I know how it feels and the challenges such children face,” he reiterated.
The group’s chairperson Ms. Grace Graced asked residents to share whatever they have during this festival season saying no one would wish to live a poor life.
“We give not because we have much to give but because we know what it means to have nothing. During this festival season, we encourage people to share the little they have with the less fortunate,” she said.
One of the beneficiaries Ms. Nayile Dapash thanked the association for being mindful of the less fortunate people during this festival season. She said that many families were struggling to place a plate of food on the table as the area experienced a prolonged dry spell.
Parts of Narok county were faced with a prolonged dry spell that left many livestock dead and families struggling to get basic needs.According to the Narok County Commissioner Isaac Masinde, parts mostly hit were Narok South, lower parts of Narok West and Narok East Sub Counties where about 115, 000 families were in dire need of food.
The government through the department of Social Protection and Special programmes gave relief food to mitigate the effects of drought in the county.
Though the short rains are being experienced in most parts of the county, the meteorological department has predicted that the rains will not prolong to January 2023 in many parts.
