57 inmates at Moyale GK prison have been released in the ongoing initiative to decongest prisons countrywide.
The convicts, 40 of whom were foreigners from the neighboring Ethiopia were set free by Marsabit High Court Judge, Justice Said Chitembwe in collaboration with Moyale’s Probation department.
Justice Chitembwe at the same time, ordered the 40 who were convicted for being in the country illegally or committing petty crimes in Kenya repatriated with immediate effect.
The other 17 Kenyans released were about to complete their terms at the correctional facility.
The Moyale Sub-county Probation Officer, Daniel Mwaura advised the beneficiaries to avoid indulging in crime and make good use of the skills they learnt at the institution to empower themselves economically.
Speaking to KNA on Tuesday, Mwaura said that the prisons decongestion program helped the ex-inmates to integrate with the community.
“Some of those released will serve non-custodial sentences under the supervision of the probation officers,” Mwaura added.
