A former Garissa University student has been arrested over an incident at the institution where over 500 mattresses in a holding store were reduced to ashes.
Speaking to KNA on phone, the Garissa County Commissioner (CC), Meru Mwangi, said that preliminary investigation points at a leadership wrangle.
Mwangi said that the CID has retrieved CCTV footage on the incident and have crucial leads that could result in further arrests.
The CC who toured the institution on Monday morning accompanied by his security team, urged the students and the institution leadership, to remain calm as police pursue the culprits.
He also urged anyone with information that could help in investigation to give to the police, or office of the DCI, or his office or any other security agency nearest to them.
“What I can say for now is that there has been a protracted leadership wrangles that led to the ouster of the former student leader and is currently the serving University Student’s Secretary General,” Mwangi said.
“We don’t want to divulge more information because the situation at the institution is fluid,” he added.
The student leader is being held at the Garissa Police Station and according to sources privy to the investigation the outcome of the inquiry will inform the next course of action.
