Several people were nabbed and large quantities of illicit brewers destroyed in an operation conducted by the Bomet County joint security team.
County Commissioner Dr Ahmed Omar said 2500 litres of Kangara and 200 litres of Chang’aa were nabbed in the Tuesday early morning raid at Emkwen sub-location, Bomet central sub-county.
Dr. Omar warned residents against heavy consumption of illicit brews noting many local youths had deviated from leading productive lives and resorted to crime related activities, owing to prolonged abuse of alcohol and drugs.
“I am urging all of you to work with the government in curbing brewing and consumption of illicit brew in our villages, which has led to backwardness and low productivity among the area residents,” he said.
The county commissioned added, ‘we need to talk and get concerned about our youths, let’s urge them to stop alcoholism and drug abuse and lead meaningful lives’.
Consequently, Dr. Omar warned that anyone arrested in the brewing dens will be imprisoned without a fine.
“We will discuss with the judiciary so that they can support us by giving out punitive measures aimed at curtailing selling and consumption of illicit brews,” noted the administrator.
At the same time, the county commissioner urged chiefs and their assistants as well as village elders to work as a team within their areas of jurisdiction and intensify war on the vice, which has impacted negatively on youths in the area.
“Through the local leadership and the Nyumba Kumi initiative, I am urging you to engage the people through regular barazas for them to understand the adverse effects of illicit brews on the overall country’s economy and education of our children,” explained Omar.
