About 400 families whose houses were marooned by floods at Tractor village, Ngaremara Ward in Isiolo on Tuesday night are spending nights in the cold or with relatives as rain continues pounding the area.
Runoff water from the heavy down pour in Tigania East, Meru County and Isiolo town also destroyed crops and disrupted business as local people incurred massive losses.
The residents appealed for assistance from the national and county governments saying they need food and non-food items support.
They also urged the contractors undertaking roads and dam projects to consider doing standard work through constructing lasting drainage systems.
Area administration assistant Mr. Alex Eila Lopiyo said that unknown number of goats and sheep were swept away by the floods.
Mr. Lopiyo said that household goods and food items worth thousands of shillings were destroyed.
Area residents urged the road contractors to redirect the seasonal rivers back to their original channels.
They appealed to Kenya Red Cross Society, National and County Government and other well wishers to assist them saying the situation was worsening with more rains yet to fall.
When contacted, Isiolo Deputy County Commissioner Mwachunga Chaunga said the national government would provide food while KRCS would help with other materials.
The DCC urged locals and especially herders who graze along the river banks to move to safer grounds.
The administrator assured Isiolo sub county residents that the government is closely monitoring the situation and a swift action would be taken in case of a disaster.
