Hundreds of Kibish residents in Turkana County were on Tuesday night forced to spend the night in the cold after a fire razed their houses.
Area Chief, David Erukudi confirmed that 300 houses were razed by the fire which started at 2pm in one of the houses in the middle of the village before spreading to nearby houses.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be established but it started in one of the houses in the middle of the village and spread quickly due to the strong winds blowing in the area,” said Erukudi.
There is no firefighting engine in the whole county. The long distance from Lodwar to Kibish would also have posed a challenge.
Erukudi appealed to the government and well-wishers to come to the rescue of the residents who lost houses and properties whose value is yet to be established.
Since 2013 the village has been suffering fire incidents almost once every year. Previous calls to have houses spread apart have been resisted due to what locals term as exposing them to attacks from neighbouring countries.
