Police in maralal have arrested 22 illegal immigrants at Shabaa area in Samburu West.
The immigrants among them a three month old baby were apprehended on Sunday evening and are believed to have travelled all the way from Eritrea heading to an unknown destination.
Maralal OCPD Abagaro Guyo confirmed that the 22 were being transported in a Toyota Land Cruiser Pick Up truck.
“The vehicle was parked in a bush at Shabaa area and members of the public became suspicious and alerted nyumba kumi members who then alerted the authorities,” he said.
The police chief said that investigations are underway to find out where the group was from and where they were heading to before they are arraigned in court.
Maralal Nyumba Kumi chairman Solomon Wanyeki who was the first to arrive at the scene said that the immigrants who were heavily packed in the vehicle looked confused.
“I think the driver got lost as he evaded roadblocks along the Isiolo Marsabit highway and ended up in Maralal. The immigrants looked dehydrated and hungry,” he said.
He thanked residents for being vigilant adding that corruption is the major cause of border loopholes in the country.
