191 affordable units in Kisii face challenges

The National government is collaborating with stakeholders to address a myriad of challenges that have temporarily stalled construction of affordable houses at Nyanchwa area, on the outskirts of Kisii town.

The government Delivery Unit and Ministry of Housing and Urban Development noted they were engaging with Kisii County Government,Ethics and Anticorruption Commission (EACC), Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and the area residents on the modalities of relocating the sewer line, and surrendering of the grabbed government land among other bottlenecks.

A team from the Regional Development Implementation and Coordination Committee which was mandated to carry out a three days end year verification of government development projects within Nyanza noted the challenges which are delaying completion of projects would be documented to ensure solutions are found.

Speaking at the Construction grounds, the Government delivery Unit Regional Coordinator, Mr. Silvance O. Onyango noted that they were engaging Governor Simba Arati to have the sewer line relocated  to allow the contractor (Sovit International Limited) resume work soon.

Onyango said they were engaging members of the public to find suitable modalities of surrendering the grabbed land to ensure they benefit maximally through the affordable housing.
He noted that resolving the issue was imperative because the project had no extension of completion time, last date being end of July next year.

The affordable housing project  will consist of 32 shops among other crosscutting amenities like a kindergarten in the phase one, but more will be included in the phase two and three which will have a total of 2300 units.

He said the housing project is worth Sh475 million and the contractor had already received advance payment awaiting to deliver their mandate.
