19-Year-Old Girl Appeals for Medical Help

A 19-year-old girl from Kakamega County is appealing for medical assistance to help her undergo a liver transplant at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

Apart from surviving on only one kidney, Valentine Wawire also suffers a double misfortune of having a heart problem.

According to her aunt, Glaudicia Barasa who is nursing her, Wawire is currently being stabilized first by doctors at the Kakamega Teaching and Referral hospital before the kidney transplant is carried out.

“We are yet to know the exact cost of the transplant but as things stand now, as a family we are struggling to pay for her weekly dialysis,” the aunt told KNA.

“Each dialysis costs 5,500 shillings per session and we need to do 16 sessions in total”, she added.

The girl, who completed her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E) in 2021 had joined Butere Technical and Vocational Training College to study for a diploma course in general agriculture but had to drop out due to her medical condition.

Amidst tears, the young girl has extended an appeal to well-wishers to come to her aid so that she may regain her health and go back to school.

“I’m requesting for financial assistance so that I can go back to school,” she pleaded.

“She suffers from body swellings, including the face and legs and has been fitted with a catheter that cost the family 20,000 shillings,” says her aunt.

Wawire, who is cared for by her aunt after her father passed on, can hardly walk and often experiences breathing problems.
