13 year boy drowns in a school swimming pool

A family at Navuhi village in central Maragoli location, Vihiga Sub County is mourning the death a 13-year-old son who drowned while swimming in Mudasa Academy’s swimming pool Saturday afternoon.

Vihiga Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Mr. Justin Nyagah told Kenya News Agency (KNA) the deceased was in a group of about 30 boys that had gone out to swim when the tragedy happened at about 4pm.

“According to villagers the boy dived into the swimming pool but failed to reappear on surface level prompting the pool’s attendant and other boys to jump into the pool in attempt to rescue him,”
reported Nyagah.

The OCPD added the team managed to remove the boy from the swimming pool in an unconscious state and rushed him to Mung’oma Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.
He advised parents to take extra care of their children especially during holidays to prevent such misfortunes.

Speaking to KNA the hospital’s Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Jerry Omondi disclosed the boy who had been a pupil at Navuhi Primary School succumbed to cardiopulmonary failure.

“The boy was rushed here by his brothers on Saturday afternoon. However efforts to save his life were futile. He succumbed to cardiopulmonary failure a condition that is secondary to swimming,”
explained the medical officer.

Speaking separately to KNA, Navuhi Primary school deputy head teacher Mrs. Caroline Afandi mourned the boy’s death describing him as a hardworking pupil who was among candidates that posted good results in 2018’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
