Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) Tana River Branch has received a consignment of rice, beans and cooking oil that will benefit about 10,000 households of hunger-stricken people in Tana River County.
Speaking Tuesday during the County Steering Group meeting held at National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) boardroom Hola, KRCS Tana River Branch Coordinator Gerald Bombe said a total of 158,647 people are facing starvation in the County.
Mr Bombe said KRCS will donate relief food to the 10,000 households currently but called on other relief agencies to distribute relief food to the other needy persons whereby his Organisation will not reach them.
He said many people are experiencing food shortage however, KRCS interventions alone are not enough therefore, and other relief agencies should come on to save lives.
The KRCS Coordinator also said, Tana River County have experienced four seasons of inadequate rainfall contributing to poor crops harvests and water shortage resulting into about 158,000 people facing starvation.
Speaking at the same meeting NDMA Tana River County Coordinator Abdi Musa said his office has received relief from National Food Security Steering group that will be distributed to about 4, 350 needy people in the County.
Mr Musa said relief agencies supplying relief food in Tana River are World Food Program, KRCS and NDMA.
